The oldest unsolved problem in MIDI controllers is labelling. Eight knobs can control anything, which means that after a week you have no idea what any of them do. The industry’s answers have been masking tape, paper overlays, coloured caps, and simply memorising it.
KB Live Solutions’ param8 answers it with screens. Two of them, above eight encoders, showing what each knob is mapped to and where it currently sits.
The hardware
- Eight infinite rotary encoders with push-button action (momentary or toggle). Endless encoders matter here: because there’s no fixed start and end, the knob’s position never disagrees with the software’s value, so switching presets doesn’t produce a jump.

Software
It ships with two dedicated Ableton Live presets — a Global Mode and a Device Mode — plus six fully customisable user presets. Configuration happens in a browser-based editor where you name encoders, assign CCs or notes, organise presets and upload them to the device. There’s latch and revert behaviour for tweaking a parameter and getting back to where you were.
A browser editor is the right call. The single most common way a small controller becomes useless is that its configuration app stops running on a current OS three years after release. A web editor isn’t immune to that, but it fails later and more gracefully than an abandoned desktop binary.
The omission
No TRS MIDI out. USB-C only, for both power and data. SYNTH ANATOMY flags it and they’re right to: it means the param8 cannot talk directly to hardware. A synth, a groovebox, a Eurorack MIDI interface — all of it needs a computer in the middle.
For an Ableton-centric setup that’s fine, since the computer is already there. For anyone building a hardware-only rig, or wanting one box that works both ways, it’s disqualifying. A single TRS jack is a small part and it converts a laptop accessory into a general-purpose controller.
Why it’s an interfaces story
Screens-above-knobs isn’t new — Elektron, Novation and others have done versions of it — but it’s usually bundled into a large, expensive surface. Putting per-knob visual feedback into something this small and this cheap is the interesting move, because the labelling problem is worst exactly where controllers are smallest.
The thing worth watching is whether the display genuinely reflects live state from the DAW, or just shows what you typed into the editor. That’s the difference between a labelled knob box and a real control surface, and it’s the first question to ask a review unit.
